Shared Grave at Ganshoji Temple

This project is a communal grave planned for the outdoor grounds of Ganshoji Temple, a Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Buddhist temple located in Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Tracing the origins of graves, burial practices are said to have begun with the custom of piling earth over the burial site and placing stones, returning the deceased to the soil. Reinterpreting this primordial act of setting stones, the communal burial is expressed through layers of overlapping stone. A grave serves as a place that connects ancestors with those living in the present, and as a site for offering prayers. The universal light introduced into the communal grave illuminates the words “Namu Amida Butsu,” aiming to create a form of memorial where visitors may, even if only for a brief moment, feel a connection with their ancestors.
