ミリカローデンには、特に目的がなくてもふらっと立ち寄ってほしいと考え、訪れる人の心を豊かにするサードプレイスを目指した。家や学校、職場では時間に追われ、自分を見失ってしまう。学校に行けない日はここに来ればいいし、家に居たくないときもここに来ればいい、そして長居していい。元気な高齢者も、疲れた若者も世代なんて関係なく、自分の生きる方向性を探りたいときや迷ったときに「応援する」ことのできる文化施設であるとよいと考えた。図書館も静かに本を読むだけの空間ではないと考え、これまでこの街に積み上げられた街の歴史を「ミリカのみち」に託し、那珂川でとれた木から生まれた「ミリカの木」に那珂川の自然への敬意を込めた。そして、家具によってそれらの周りにたくさんの居場所を計画した。

At Mirica Roden, we envisioned a welcoming third place where people can drop by anytime, with or without a purpose. At home, school, or work, time pressures often make people lose themselves. Here, they can take a break—stay as long as they like, whether they need an escape or a place to belong. This cultural facility supports all generations—energetic seniors, weary young people—anyone searching for direction in life. The library is more than a quiet reading space. “Mirica no Michi” represents the town’s history, while “Mirica no Ki,” made from Nakagawa wood, honors its nature. Around them, we designed inviting spaces where people can pause, rest, and connect.
